Summer Safety Tips
Summer is here and there are so many reasons to love this time of year. From fun beach days to family vacations, summer is a special time of year to break from the normal routine and capture meaningful memories with family and friends. While you enjoy the summer rays, here are our top safety tips:
Sun Safety:
Make Sunscreen a Daily Staple
Sunscreen should be a part of your daily routine year-round. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF value of 30 or higher (use 50 when possible).
Wear Protective Clothing
Limiting the amount of sun-exposed skin can help to protect against harmful UV rays. For the most protection, wear a hat that supplies shade to your face, ears, and back of your neck and UV protective clothing.
Sport Your Sunglasses
UV radiation can damage the sensitive skin on your eyelids and under your eyes, increasing the risk of cataracts. We recommend wearing “100% UV protection” sunglasses year-round.
Water Safety:
Swim Smart
If you’re headed to the pool or beach this summer, always swim in designated areas with a lifeguard present, never swim alone, and wear life jackets where necessary.
Know Your Limits
While swimming after eating doesn’t actually pose the health risk many of us were brought up to believe it does, drinking alcohol and swimming certainly does. Always avoid alcohol consumption while swimming or boating, as it impairs judgment and coordination.
Learn CPR
Consider taking a CPR course to be prepared for emergencies around water.
Travel Safety:
Check Travel Advisories
Especially when traveling internationally, consult official travel advisories for your destination to stay informed about any health or safety concerns.
Drink Bottled Water
Unsure about water quality in your destination? Opt for bottled water whether it’s for drinking or brushing your teeth. Remember to ask for drinks with no ice to avoid water-borne contaminants.
Vaccine Requirements
Make sure you’re up to date on routine vaccinations like Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) and your COVID-19 booster. Book an appointment with your CloseKnit Primary Care to discuss your travel plans and other vaccinations that may be necessary.
About ready to head out for the summer? Remember to check in with your CloseKnit Primary Care Provider beforehand to make sure you’re up to date on necessary vaccinations.
